Nature lovers will appreciate the fact that Mexico has almost 23 millions hectares of protected natural areas, managed by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP).
A Protected Natural Area is a portion of land or water representative of Mexico's various ecosystems, whose original environment has not been significantly altered and which produces ecological benefits which are universally recognised. It is created by a presidential decree, and the activities which are allowed in the area are decided according to the Ecological Equilibrium and Environment Protection Regulation and its management program.
Protected Natural Areas are divided into National Parks, Biosphere Reserves, Natural Monuments, Protected Natural Resource Areas, Protected Flora and Fauna Areas and Sanctuaries.
We have published a full list of the parks and the reserves divided by regions (links on the left), with a brief description of their ecosystems and characteristics, and are now listing the remaining areas, with their relative geo-coded location on our interactive map.
